Around 1998, the prime time of Wolmyeongdong’s development, pastor Jung Myeong Seok went up to the mountains and diligently cut the grass after finishing his morning prayer. He did this because he knew that the more you cultivate the area the better it becomes, whereas if you do not cultivate the area it merely remains the same. Therefore, he worked hard while sweating. Pastor Jung always brought a sickle and a saw with him to ensure that he could trim the trees and make them appear even more good-looking. However, if the trees were not pruned, no matter how good-looking they could be, they would not look good. So he always stayed busy. He worked intently, pruning tree after tree, without even noticing that someone was standing next to him, when he suddenly had a realization through hearing a voice of inspiration.

He realized, “Even if the environment is slightly lacking, clean it up and continuously cultivate it.” After having that realization he looked around the area and noticed that there was still a lot of places left to prune. During the process of developing Wolmyeongdong, he always asked his disciples to work together by saying, “People who use this place don’t understand what’s required to take care of it. They think it is merely good to use it; however, if you do not take care of it and manage it, you can’t continue using it. Therefore, you should cultivate it together.”

Pastor Jung also said, “We should take care of Wolmyeongdong together because it is the place that God has given us. Even if a tree is ugly, manage it; and even if a tree is good-looking, manage it. Even if we can’t use a tree right now, it will become grand in the future, so manage it.”

He also heard a voice that said, “Do not manage them simply for yourself or the present time, but manage them for the future. God still exists after we die, so take care of them for him.”

The trees that Pastor Jung and his disciples started to cultivate three to six years ago grew beautifully as if they only just bought and planted them. When they originally bought the trees they all looked pathetic; however, Pastor Jung had no choice but to plant them by the road. And now they have become grand trees! The trees that were not planted by the road were left unmanaged because they did not urgently require management; however, they couldn’t grow anymore due to the shady environment. Therefore, Pastor Jung and his disciples managed them too and worked even harder to develop Wolmyeongdong.

한창 월명동 개발을 하던 1998년 즈음,

정명석 목사는 아침 기도를 하고 산에 올라서 열심히 풀을 베었습니다.
가꾼 만큼만 좋아지고,

가꾸지 않은 곳은 그대로 있기에 정명석 목사는 열심히 땀을 흘렸습니다.
정명석 목사는 항상 낫과 톱을 가지고 다녔습니다.
잘생긴 나무를 손질하면 더 멋있어지고,

하지 않은 것은 제 아무리 잘생긴 나무라도 해도 그냥 있으니,

그의 손길은 늘 분주합니다.
그렇게 손질을 하고, 옆에 사람이 서있는 것도 잊고서 열심히 일하고 있을 때

정명석 목사에게 이런 깨달음과 영감의 음성이 들려왔습니다.

환경이 조금 나쁠지라도 깨끗하게 하고, 자꾸 가꾸어야 한다는 깨달음이었습니다.
그런 깨달음을 받고 나서 가꿀 곳을 보니 아직도 손댈 곳이 너무나 많았습니다.
정명석 목사는 월명동을 개발할 때 제자들에게 늘 함께 하자고 말씀하였습니다.
사용하는 사람은 사용을 해도 잘 모릅니다.
사용만 하면 되는 것으로 생각하지만, 깨끗하게 하고 가꾸고 관리하지 않으면

계속 사용할 수 없게 되니 함께 가꾸고 사용하는 것입니다.

하나님이 주신 이곳 월명동을 같이 가꾸는 것입니다.
정명석 목사는 나무가 못 생겼으면 못 생긴 대로 가꾸고,

잘 생겼으면 잘 생긴 대로 가꾸면, 당세에 다 이루지 못하더라도

후대에는 거대한 나무가 되니 가꾸자고 하였습니다.

그리고 또 한 깨달음은
“너만 위해서, 당세만 위해서가 아니라 미래를 위해서이다.

하나님은 우리가 죽은 미래까지도 계시니 가꾸어라” 는 영감의 음성이었습니다.

월명동에 이미 3-4년 전, 5-6년 전에 손을 댄 곳은 나무를 사다가

심어놓은 것같이 멋있게 되었습니다. 그 때는 다 꾀죄죄하여서

할 수 없이 길가 옆에 보이는 곳만 심어 놓았던 것인데, 그 나무가 큰 나무가 되었습니다.
길가가 아닌 곳은 우선 급한 것이 아니기에 놔두었더니 그 나무는 가려져 있어

더 크지를 못하고 있었습니다.

그래서 정명석 목사와 그의 제자들은 제 2의 선까지 손을 대면서

열심히 월명동 개발을 하였습니다.
