Pastor Jung Myeong Seok was born into a very poor family. At every meal he worried about whether there would be any food to eat, because He frequently went without. This was just one of the many worries he faced in his daily life, in fact they piled up to become as big as a mountain. So Pastor Jung used to say, “Because I don’t have any material possessions, where is my heart? I don’t own any possessions, so my heart is nowhere.”
 
For those who have material possessions, their hearts go towards them, but Pastor Jung had nothing. All he had was an old shabby house in Wolmyeongdong; he didn’t even have a rice patty. He also had a little field, but during the monsoon season the rain swept the soil away so he had to carry soil, pour it into the field and plant vegetation again.
 
The field was located on a slope, so it was not ideal; however, Pastor Jung’s family pulled out all the weeds in the field until the point no weeds remained.

Pastor Jung uses his field as a comparison to our life of faith, and he coaches us on how to farm that field. “If the owner of the field does not plow the field, it will become a mountain of grass. In the same way, if the Lord does not take care of you, your life will become like the mountain of grass. Once the field is full of grass, it will appear overgrown. Imagine this, and diligently plow the field of your heart, so it does not become overgrown."

정명석 목사가 태어난 가정은 그다지 넉넉한 형편의 가정이 아니었습니다.
너무 없어서 끼니를 걱정해야 했고 인생고민이 산더미처럼 밀려오는 형편이었습니다.
그래서 옛날에 정명석 목사는
“나는 물질이 없으니 내 마음은 어디에 있을까요?

나는 물질이 없으니 마음 둘 곳이 없습니다.”

라고 했습니다.
 
물질 있는 사람은 물질에 마음을 두지만 정명석 목사는 가진 것이 아무것도 없었습니다.
월명동 고향 헌집이나 하나있을 뿐이고, 논도 없었고, 밭이래야 한번 장마 지면

그 다음에는 흙을 갖다 부어 다시 심을 정도였습니다.
 
게다가 밭은 층층목 있는 비탈길 쪽으로 지형은 그렇게 좋은 곳에 있지 않았지만 그래도

정명석 목사의 밭은 얼마나 풀을 맸는지 풀이 하나도 없었습니다.

정명석 목사는 자신의 밭을 비유하며 이와 같이 이러하다고

우리들의 신앙 농사 짓는 것을 코치해 줍니다.
“주인이 손을 대지 않으면 그대로 풀로 산이 되듯이,

주님이 손을 대지 않으시면 여러분도 산이 되어 버립니다.

밭이 산이 되면 무성해 집니다.

이런 것을 생각하면서 마음 밭을 부지런히 정리를 잘해야 하겠습니다.”
